A customer says they left you a five-star review, and your profile doesn't show it. Google keeps a help article for exactly this problem, and the usual reasons are in it[1].
Google reviews not showing up usually comes down to one of six reasons. The review is still in Google's policy check, or the spam filter held it. It broke a content policy. You merged two profiles. The customer's phone or Maps app is out of date. Or Google paused reviews for your profile or category.
Short answer
Google says its policy check can take a few days. If a review is still missing after that, it was most likely filtered or removed, and reviews removed for policy violations are not restored.
Updated October 2026. Google's help pages checked October 16, 2026.
Google says that in 2025 its "advanced systems and expert analysts blocked or removed over 292 million policy-violating reviews"[2]. This guide covers how to tell which cause hit you, what you can do about each, and the parts nobody can fix.
Missing Google reviews: a quick diagnosis
Start with what you can see. Check your profile from a private or signed-out browser window first, because checking signed out shows what a customer sees. Then match the symptom:
Swipe the table sideways →
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One new review is missing, posted in the last few days | Still in Google's policy check | Wait a few days, then look again from a signed-out browser |
| Customer says they posted it; it never appears publicly | Still in the policy check, or filtered or removed | Wait a few days; after that, assume it won't appear |
| A review was live, then vanished | Removed for a policy violation, or deleted by its author | Accept it, or contact support if it followed a reinstatement |
| Reviews went missing right after a merge | Merged profiles still syncing | Wait a few days for both sets to display |
| A customer says the review form fails or never posts | Older phone or out-of-date Maps app | Ask them to update Google Maps and try once more |
| No new reviews at all, or the review button is gone | Reviews paused for your profile or category | Check that your primary category fits your business |
| Your whole profile is missing or marked suspended | Profile suspension, not a review problem | Fix the suspension first; reviews follow the profile |

See how review monitoring worksWhy are my Google reviews not showing? The 6 causes
Google keeps one help article for this problem, "About missing or delayed reviews"[1]. It opens with the blunt version: "Usually, reviews are removed for policy violations like spam or inappropriate content." Here is each cause it lists, plus the spam filter, which Google covers in its content policy instead.
1. The review is still being checked
"Reviews are checked to ensure they comply with our policies. In some cases, this process might take a few days, which can delay a review's appearance on your profile."[1]
Google gives "a few days". If a customer posted yesterday, give it time and check again from a signed-out window. If a few days have passed and it still isn't public, one of the causes below is more likely.
2. Google's spam filter held it back
Google doesn't publish how its filter scores a review, but its content policy says what it is looking for. Under "Fake engagement" it bans "Reviews or ratings that have been paid for, directly or in kind". It also bans "Content that has been posted from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person."
Under "Repetitive content" it bans "Posting the same content multiple times either from the same account or multiple accounts"[3].
Real reviews can trip these checks when the way they were collected looks like a banned pattern. Several customers posting from one shared device can look like "Content that has been posted from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person"[3]. Google doesn't publish which signals it uses. Our write-up of the 2026 review purge covers how collection rules tightened this year.
3. It broke a content policy and was removed
"Reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored. This ensures reviews on Google products are relevant, helpful, and trustworthy."[1]
A glowing review that came from an incentive or from staff can come down, and so can a fake one-star. A review that breaks the rules does not remove itself.
If a negative review still on your profile looks fake, here is how to spot and report a fake Google review.
4. You recently merged two profiles
"If you recently merged Business Profiles, it might take a few days for reviews from both profiles to display on Search and Maps."[1]
This one surprises owners who moved premises, rebranded or cleaned up a duplicate listing. The reviews are not gone; they are waiting to appear on the surviving profile. If a duplicate listing still exists, customers may also be reviewing that one instead of yours, so search your business name on Maps and see whether two pins come up.
5. The customer's phone or Maps app is out of date
"Customers who use older phones or software might have trouble when they try to leave reviews. We recommend they update their Maps app to the latest version."[1]
Here the review never existed in the first place. If one customer tells you the form failed, ask them to update Google Maps and try once. Don't ask them to post the same text over and over; repeated identical content is what the repetitive-content rule targets[3]. If you're the customer, see how to leave a Google review.
6. Google paused reviews for your profile or category
"In certain situations, Google might temporarily disable user-created content, including reviews, for certain Business Profiles or business categories to protect business owners."[1]
The clearest case is schools. Google says "reviews and ratings will be removed and disabled for Google Business Profiles primarily categorized as educational institutions for students aged 6 to 18." Universities, day care centers and swim schools are excluded[1]. If your business sits in the wrong category, Google's own advice is to change it, so check your primary category before anything else.
When it's the profile, not the review
If the whole profile is suspended, every review goes with it until the profile comes back. That is a different problem with a different fix: start with why Google suspends a Business Profile, then the reinstatement guide. Google adds a warning worth knowing: "Sometimes reviews might be removed after a Business Profile is reinstated. If this happens, contact support for assistance."[1]
When reviews vanish after they were live
A review that was public and then disappears was not delayed. Two reasons in Google's help article fit a live review. It was removed for a policy violation, and those "won't be restored". Or it went after a profile was reinstated, where Google says to contact support[1]. For the April 2026 changes and how owners responded, see our breakdown of the 2026 review purge.
Two other things can explain a drop. A reviewer can delete or edit their own review[4]. And if the drop came with a wave of one-star reviews, see how to respond to review bombing and extortion.
What you can't fix
Some of this is out of your hands, and it is better to know that before you spend a week on it.
You can't bring back a removed review. Google is explicit that reviews removed for policy violations won't be restored[1]. The one exception it names is reviews lost after a reinstatement, where support can help.
You can't see or release filtered reviews. Google's help article gives owners no list of held reviews and no button to approve one.
You can't speed up the policy check. Google's policy check can take "a few days", and owners have no way to speed it up[1].
You can't remove an honest negative review. A real customer's fair complaint stays, whatever you pay anyone.
What you can do is report the reviews that do break the rules. Google's reporting page explains the steps[5]. It is worth checking yours before writing them off.
If a fake or rule-breaking negative review is still on your profile:
How to keep new reviews showing up
Two of the six causes, the spam filter and policy removals, depend on how reviews were collected. A short checklist keeps you on the right side of the filter:
- Ask every customer the same way, after they leave, and let each one post from their own phone, not a shared device[3].
- Ask everyone, not only happy customers. Filtering who gets the request is review gating, and Google bans it.
- Never offer a discount, gift or payment for a review. Google treats it as paid engagement[3].
- Aim for a steady flow rather than a burst after one big push. Review velocity explains why a regular pace matters.
- Keep one profile per location and merge duplicates instead of leaving them live.
- Watch your review count every week so a drop gets noticed while you can still act on it.
